Deepening Sustainability by Developing More Asian Faculty

Many years of dreaming, strategizing, and planning were realized this past October when A2 held its first-ever international faculty development training in Bangkok, Thailand. Under the direction of Dr. Bob and Erlinda Betia, 34 men and women from 10 Asian Access countries buckled down for an intensive two days of training, designed to equip them to serve as Asian Access faculty—both within their own countries and throughout Asia...

Vision Festa Church Multiplication Conference

vision festa panelThe Church in Japan faces a crisis. And Japan’s pastors and church leaders are stepping up to face it head-on. The crisis? Unless the Church begins to grow immediately, it is possible that the Christian community in Japan will literally die out within 30 years. It’s stark evidence that illustrates how difficult it has been for the Gospel to impact the Japanese culture. The encouragement? Leaders in Japan are collaborating to explore new ways to plant and multiplying churches. In October, over 100 leaders from throughout Japan came together at Vision Festa...

mon ideree photographerMeet the Bird Man, my friend Ideree. (See him pictured here.) Why do I call Ideree the Bird Man? Because he’s more famous worldwide for his bird photography than for his pastoring a church or working with the leadership team of Asian Access. I tease him saying “Ideree, you are the most famous pastor in Mongolia.” He’s clearly embarrassed by that. But, check out his FB page and see the birds. You’ll see why...

00333 00553Meet Ariunbold! He has vision like I’ve rarely seen. It’s a God-given vision, passion, and gift mix that truly is rare among pastors these days but one that Asian Access loves to fan the flames for. Ariunbold truly is “Bold” in his faith and action. When he joined the first A2 cohort in Mongolia almost 20 years ago, Ariunbold had started 3 churches. But through Asian Access he was inspired and equipped to take his unique gifts into a whole new stratosphere. He is the embodiment of our brand: “Changing the few who change the many”...

The men and women who volunteer to serve as faculty for Asian Access are experienced pastors and ministers. They teach out of their own ministry experience, and their dream is for our Asian Access leaders to take what they learn and run with it in their own ministries. This dream was recently realized following the May 2018 A2/Philippines session. The couple serving as faculty (who prefer not to be identified) shared a Bible study method they have found effective with unreached...

00329 00544For several years, Asian Access has focused on the importance of sustainability. However, progress was so slow that most of our leaders would say things like, “Really? Do we have to talk about that again? All we do is talk. Nothing seems to ever go anywhere!”  Fortunately, the last few years we’ve taken baby steps and today we are seeing tremendous momentum. Things are gaining steam. Why, you may ask is sustainability so important?

kishinamiagape love - n. selfless love of one person for another without sexual implications (especially love that is spiritual in nature)

Silk and I enjoyed visiting Pastor Kishinami this week who is noted for planting 33 house chapels in Tohoku following the triple disaster of March 11, 2011. What a wonderful visit with tremendous lessons learned. The key to Pastor Kishinami’s success has been Agape Love! He shared how love, without expecting anything in return (no return on investment), is the key to evangelism and church planting. While we were together, Pastor Kishinami even cut the grass of one of the friends to show his love for the neighbors as a tangible expression of this love. It was fun watching him serve and interact with the people. See the photo of him serving the community!

Here are two more reflections shared by participants from the Marriage & Family module in a restricted-access country which was taught by Joe and Silk Handley. These clips are blurred to protect identities...

1. "It's more important for me to be a good father than a good pastor."

"In this country, everything is kept secret. No one shares openly. But, this week at A2 has been different. I’ve been surprised at how open everyone is, sharing about everything they are going through. This is so powerful, I want my husband to attend again!"

Recently Silk and I had the privilege of teaching for our "Marriage and Family" module in a South Asian Buddhist country that we cannot name for security reasons. In fact, it’s a country we just launched last year. At the week-long session, we met Darwa, the wife of an Asian Access participant in that country. She was attending the A2 session along with all the other spouses and kids of the current participants. But Darwa piqued my interest when she declared, "I had no idea how good this was!" ...

Joe and Silk recently taught the Marriage & Family module in a restricted-access country. Here are some testimonials from that session, blurred to protect identities...

Listen to Joe and Silk Handley share reflections from their first time teaching the Marriage & Family module, where they recently led the session in one of Asian Access' newest countries.

Watch the brief video clip here...

What a joy it was for Silk and me to teach together for the first time on Marriage and Family. We were joined by our teammates Christy Rajender and Jeyakaran Emmanuel from India serving with them in this remote Himalayan Kingdom. We had a great time playing games, spending time with the families and digging into God’s word helping couples grow closer together and become better husbands, wives and parents. Many shared how impactful the week was for them and their marriage. Some had said they had been through the bible passages and special material before but they found this module particularly challenging. Why? Because we actually dug in deep and discussed the Word together, sharing how these principles and values work out in...

suzuki hikari PALD 1.1 Apr25 2018 6A few years ago, Pastor Hikari Suzuki, went through Asian Access leader development process in Japan and his strategy paper which every graduate is required to write proved substantive in the life of his church. He was groomed by his predecessor to become the senior pastor and the plan he developed during his Asian Access cohort became pivotal in the life of their church. His predecessor went on to start a daughter church of the congregation and the mother church started different services to reach the various communities they had...
