suicide rates in JapanDeclining Rates, But Daily Reality

It is well known that Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Fortunately, the numbers have been declining in recent years as can be seen from this graph. That said, many days I ride the trains in Tokyo and a delay occurs because of “an accident”. It’s so sad to see. And, it’s a complicated situation as culturally many Japanese see suicide as a way to retain honor for one’s nation or family as in the case of war before being overtaken by an enemy or by saving your family from the shame of losing your job, and so on. Yesterday, this all became much more vivid to me as...

munemitsu janice 200pxAsian Access was so impressed, I asked her to join our board!

A year ago, my friend and colleague Adrian De Visser suggested I get to know Janice Munemitsu. What a powerhouse! Upon Adrian’s recommendation, I quickly invited her to teach with Asian Access and boy was I impressed. She co-taught with me in Cambodia which she references below and as I got to know her that week, I thought, Janice would make a great board member. That led us on a several month journey of discernment… More on that later. But first, check out Janice’s sharing about her time in Cambodia...

Three countries work together to lead an A2 session

group1Every organization, both spiritual and secular, has vision and mission statements, and Asian Access is no exception. Our vision is: To see a vibrant community of servant leaders with vision, character and competence leading the church across Asia. And our mission is: To identify, develop and release emerging kingdom leaders to unite the church, multiply leaders and congregations, and extend the transforming power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Making vision and mission a reality is an ongoing challenge for any organization, and Asian Access is no exception. So it is especially encouraging when everything comes together beautifully, as it just has in one of our newest countries (which, for security reasons, we cannot identify by name)...

man hidden identity“We were busy, but with no priorities. Doing lots of ‘ministry’, but it was superficial. Nine years wasted. It was ‘Preach here! Evangelize there! Plant that church!’ We were all running around on our own. We were not reproducing ourselves. It was all we that we knew. Then we got involved with Asian Access. We learned how to...

earthquake mapA2 President Joe Handley discusses Indonesia double disaster

Indonesia (MNN) — Joe Handley of Asian Access shares information they received from pastors responding to Indonesia’s recent earthquake and tsunami:

  • The earthquake created liquefaction or like quicksand effect in the soil
  • For first responder aid (up to 6 months), we recommend agencies such as International aid agencies
  • such as World Vision and World Relief (especially Lutheran World Relief)
  • Asian Access' strategy is to provide long-term presence, coming alongside pastors and leaders, empowering and equipping them to respond over the long haul.
  • Right now people need blankets, food, supplies for those who have lost everything.
  • importance of the presence of Christ-followers to meet needs and listening to people's stories and pray for them.

Indonesia (MNN) — The hits just keep on coming for Indonesia. A volcano erupted yesterday on Sulawesi, the same island rocked on Friday by an earthquake-tsunami combo. As described here, a massive explosion of ash blast more than 19,700 feet into the sky from Mount Soputan – one of Sulawesi’s most active volcanoes. Experts tell the Associated Press there’s no concrete evidence linking Soputan’s activity with the 7.5 magnitude earthquake on September 28, but the disasters could be connected. Thankfully, the ash explosion isn’t...

kärin primuthA2 Board Member calls for more coordinated efforts in mission

Orlando (MNN) — Asian Access board member Kärin Primuth and Mission Network News' Katey Hearth discuss Great Commission trends at the 2018 Missio Nexus Leadership Conference.

Primuth calls for more coordination and collaboration between groups in mission to maximize our overall effectiveness in achieving the Great Commission. Using Jesus' prayer for unity in John 17, she highlights the partnership models that both Asian Access and visionSynergy are implementing in their respective circles to contribute to the advance of the Gospel.

Over 935 missions agency and church leaders gathered for three days of discussion, teachings, and networking. One of the event’s keynote speakers was Asian Access board member Karin Primuth. Myanmar (MNN) — The global community is stepping up pressure on Myanmar while Christians in neighboring Bangladesh care for Rohingya refugees. “In the midst of this ‘ethnic cleansing’ type of situation, the Church is just trying to be the Body of Christ reach out to their neighbors, and share the love of Jesus,” says Asian Access’ Joe Handley. “They’ve seen hundreds, maybe even thousands, come to...

The Forbes.com’s number 1 Business Book of 2016 was, KEEP IT SIMPLE: Unclutter Your Mind to Uncomplicate Your Life written by Joe Calloway. The book challenges us to resist the temptation to overcomplicate things and to boil things down to the essence of what matters most. It confronts our natural almost unnoticed tendency to drift towards complexity or away from the purpose for which we exist. It takes some continued resolve to keep it simple and focused. Calloway’s advice is to boil things down to three simple rules, like the large national trucking company that reduced things to three simple rules:

  1. Pick it up when you said you would.
  2. Deliver it when...

Public DomainJapan (MNN) – Japan continues to be decimated by natural disasters after a summer filled with floods, heatwaves, earthquakes, typhoons, and landslides. Typhoon Jebi, the strongest to hit Japan’s mainland island of Honshu in a quarter century, made landfall on Tuesday. At least ten people have been reported dead. The storm overturned cars and quite literally tore the country apart. Reports say the violent winds pulled Houunmaru, ...

India (MNN) — In the wake of historic flooding, Indian officials say it’s going to take at least $3 billion to rebuild Kerala over the next two years. The deluge laid waste to nearly every inch of Kerala’s society, destroying more than 10,000 kilometers of roads and the livelihoods of at least 200,000 people. As explained the government is turning away offers of international relief aid. “The government is committed to meeting the requirements for relief and rehabilitation through domestic efforts,” a spokesperson for India’s foreign ministry said last week...

Japan (MNN) — Radiation remains a challenge even seven years after Japan’s nuclear meltdown outside Fukushima. On Thursday, UN experts called on Japan to help cleanup workers who may not have received proper training on radiation exposure. The special rapporteurs also warned of exploitation. Takeshi Takazawa of Asian Access saw the effects of radiation first-hand during a recent trip. Donning protective gear, he and other A2 leaders visited a parsonage approximately three miles from the nuclear plant...
