This week’s blog has a video clip of a fun baby shower game... Of course, for those of us eating the baby food, I’m not sure how much “fun” it really was. Check out the video clip and you’ll be sure to get a laugh.

As for the celebration, our colleague, Tsuneya Kiguchi and his wife had a new baby and we held a party for them. Their new daughter is named Mioko which has a beautiful meaning. It means “a person who walks with God” or “a person who chooses to obey God as a priority.” What a beautiful name!

It’s so fun to celebrate a newborn’s life. It’s a refreshing reminder of our new life with Christ. That’s why I love the name Mioko so much. When we put our faith in Christ, we have a new set of priorities. We begin a journey of walking with God and choosing to obey him as our first love. It brings a freshness to our life and frees us from the bondage of our past.

We welcome baby Mioko Kiguchi into our family and likewise we are eager to see new babies being born in Christ throughout Asia. What a great day of celebration and what a great reminder of the purpose God has given us as a mission: to see new life in Christ multiplied through vibrant communities of faith across the continent.

Handley family in Karuizawa

What a joy to be with our Asian Access Family in Karuizawa the last several days. Silk and I thoroughly enjoyed being with the team and watching our children bond with our staff families. It seems like every time we turn around, the Lord affirms the sense of family that the A2 community has become for us. What a joy to know that your calling is clear and to work with such a wonderful mission family...

Asia (MNN) ― Asia is the world's largest and most-populous continent.  Buddhism, Hinduism and a host of other religions compete for dominance, and most of the world's unreached live in Asia.

Conflicting worldviews have led to a spiritual dissonance in many of these countries, which leaves millions open

Bruce Johnson, VP for Leadership Development“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven...” Ecclesiastes 3:1
My friend and colleague, Bruce Johnson, Asian Access Vice President for Leadership Development is well along in the process of becoming the next U.S. Director for SIM "Serving in Mission." The Lord has masterfully orchestrated this surprise to Bruce, SIM and us here at Asian Access. My sense is that what Bruce describes as a kairos moment has truly come to pass. Asian Access, SIM and Bruce have all been well prepared for this Kingdom change.  However, we simply didn’t anticipate it; it was a complete...

Sri Lanka (MNN) ― U.S. Congressmen are pressing Sri Lanka to drop its controversial anti-conversion bill.

The proposed bill, called the "Prohibition of Forcible Conversions," imposes fines of up to 500,000 Sri Lankan rupees ($4,425 USD) and up to seven years in prison for trying to convert a Sri Lankan citizen

Snow plow in Hokkaido

When the alarm rang at 4:42am this past Sunday we were both dreaming about time. Wakako was dreaming it was 3:30 and she had just one more hour to sleep. In my dream it was 2:30 so I had two more.

But we'd run out of time to sleep and were up early to leave in time for the 7:00am service at Sapporo Bible Church.  It took 55 minutes to slide across town, avoiding the many plows working hard to clear snow that had just fallen...

The White Moon Celebration

The White Moon which is the Lunar New Year is one the main two big public annual events, next to the Naadam.  It usually celebrated in February or March depending on the lunar calendar.  It marks the end of Winter and the beginning of spring and the new yeaґs cycle. Prior to the holiday people clean and tidy their gers or houses to enter the New Year in order and cleanness.  The White Moon Eve is celebrated in families eating a lot of food mainly buuz, meat, rice, salads, etc... symbolizing the prosperity of the coming year.

A2 Board of Directors

What makes a great board of directors?

Well, I recently attended a forum called the CEO/Board Chair Dialog with Ron McMahon, chairman of our board. At the forum we learned some “best practices” for non-profit board governance or “running a board”. As I listened and learned, it dawned on me what a fantastic board we have with Asian Access. I thought of the ten or so boards that I have served on over the last 20 years and realized the quality of our Asian Access Board of Directors. Our board operates by many of the best practices suggested by the forum and they are generous, gracious, wise and willing to work to see the ministry thrive...

Sri Lanka flag"Bill for the Prohibition of Forcible Conversions" up for a vote in Sri Lanka

I'm quite concerned after reading the article entited, "Sri Lankan Churches May Think Twice Before Helping Poor" on ChristianPost.com.

The article says that if the anti-conversion bill is passed by the Sri Lanka Parliament, "any act to convert or attempt to convert a person from one religion to another by the use of force, fraud or allurement will result in serious punishments. Those found guilty of breaking the law can be imprisoned for up to...

Japan (MNN) ― Last month, Asian Access offered an opportunity for volunteers to serve missionary kids in Japan. A team of 6 - 10 was needed to help shine the light of Christ in the dark country. Stephen T. Hoke, Ph.D.

A few months ago, the national director of the A2 program in his Asian country asked me if I know how to send missionaries from a church.

I said, "Well, that’s something I’ve done for over a decade"  (almost 20 years, in fact).

He said, "We’re now looking to send missionaries from our church to other parts of our country but we don’t know how"...

Wakako and I with the Director of Alpha Japan, Nobu Nagai Last week we had Alpha-Japan staff here in Sapporo.  Wakako and I worked with them and local church leaders to hold training events and a pastors' luncheon.  I was encouraged by:

 2. Seeing one church now preparing to start its first course send more than a third of its members to the training event on Saturday.

3.  A story Pastor Kita of Alpha Japan shared...

Japan (MNN) ― Have you ever considered going on a short-term mission trip where you can have an impact on someone's life? If you haven't, I'm sure you've known someone who is looking for a great intercultural missions experience.
