While in Cambodia...

I asked Dr. Perry Bowers why he would take a few weeks of his time to come to Cambodia to train only 12 pastors when he could be training thousands of pastors in other settings.

His answer? ...

mongolian horsemilk 1Have you ever had horse's milk? I have... Bruce Johnson and I had a wonderful trip to Asia recently and while in Mongolia our A2 leadership team took us on a fun little excursion about an hour or so outside of Ulaan Baatar. We entered a Gurt (Yurt for my Kazakh friends) and the hosts offered us a goblet of horse's milk as a special gift. So, each of us in turn, drank from the metal goblet. All I can say is "What an unusual taste!" ...

Here's a brief video clip of me with a good view of Ulaanbaatar, the capital city.

Please continue praying for the Church in Mongolia.

My previous post highlighted Pastor Ariunbold in Mongolia during my recent visit. I figured it would be great to let you hear directly from him.

Here he responds to my question, "What impact has Asian Access had on your life and ministry?"

Please pray for the Church in Mongolia to transform the nation through discipleship, one person at a time. This is the common goal of churches and pastors I've encountered here.

For Christ's Kingdom,

Joe in Mongolia with Pastor Chinzorig, Pastor Ariunbold, of and Bruce JohnsonWhat a terrific time I’ve had in Mongolia! Pastor Ariunbold (pictured between Bruce Johnson and me) expanded his vision tremendously through Asian Access. Initially he simply thought about developing his own church but following the A2 experience, Ariunbold gained a greater vision for ...

My eyes have been glued to the Olympics the last week or so. The opening ceremony, Michael Phelps and Dara Torres—all have captured my imagination. The opening was a fresh reminder of what heaven will look like (Revelation 5:9): people from every tongue and tribe worshipping God in unity. What a glorious day that will be! The Olympics sort of foreshadow that for me. Before Revelation 5:9 though, we have some ...

Joe with Pastor Masuda & family

It is so exciting to now be up and running as the president of Asian Access. My first few weeks have been inspiring as I’ve met many of our staff and partners in the US and Japan. I’m also looking forward to another upcoming trip at the end of August to Mongolia, Cambodia, Singapore and one additional country to continue meeting our team!

Networks that Multiply Churches

God is doing awesome things and it is such a joy to see what is happening.  A few weeks ago. . .

a ger

I never particularly liked gers (yurts) since my childhood, being born and raised in the city, thinking it is not modern, messy, primitive, complicated etc. After Jesus accepted me, I started to realize many negative principles behind the city lifestyle, and started valuing old way of Mongolians living in gers. I probably can not live in a ger, but serious about applying the principles of community living and fighting the spirit of self-seeking and materialism...

A few weeks ago, I met Ken, the founder of our mission. What an amazing guy! Ken is a passionate follower of Christ who is a catalytic leader in God’s mission. What struck me more than anything was a story that arose during our conversation. When Ken began the work in Japan over 40 years ago, he asked a Japanese pastor about his vision. The pastor went on in great detail about his vision for multiplying churches around Tokyo. After sharing a good bit of time, the Japanese leader said, "I'm sorry, I've been talking all this time about my vision. Would you please tell me about your vision for the ministry?"

Joe with former interim president Bruce JohnsonWhat a fantastic time I've had here in Japan the last couple weeks! I've traveled North to South and back again and met tons of wonderful pastors and our incredible Asian Access mission family. It’s been totally awesome! God is doing great things across the country; things that I had no idea were going on. . .

I thought it would be neat to share a quick video log from Japan on day 5 of my first trip here.

Don't expect a lot of video logs for my blog entries, but I hope to post some video clips every once in a while. Thanks for praying for me and my family during my trip.  I'm having a blast!

My family, taken June 2008.Today is my first official day as president of Asian Access. And with this post, I enter the blogosphere. I am grateful to God for what He has done in my life to get me to this pivotal point. And I am humbled to be in this position. I am also thankful for my time at Rolling Hills Covenant Church and Azusa Pacific University and what the Lord taught me through those roles and, more significantly, through the people I served alongside. I hope I can apply those lessons in this whole new ministry context. And now I, along with my wife Silk and kids Rebecca, Rachel and John join a new community...

Joe Handley starts work as President of Asian Access on Monday, June 30.  As he joins the A2 Community, I thought it would be good to hear from our board members about our new president.

So here are some statements from the Asian Access Board of Directors regarding the selection of Joe Handley as the fourth permanent president of Asian Access:

Ron McMahon

President, McMahon Development Group (San Diego, CA); Chairman of the Board of Directors:

"The Board of Directors was unanimous...
