  • Yearnings and Callings for 2022

    A2 happy new year 2022 768x485

    Happy New Year, Dear Friends!

    This post is a little later than I had hoped because our family was hit with the coronavirus variant over the holidays. We are deeply grateful for your prayers and appreciate you for the way we journey together in life and mission.

  • Looking Back on 2020, Praying Forward

    Dear Friends,

    As 2020 wound to a close, the Lord impressed on me the following passage:

    "In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind." —John 1:4

    LOOKING BACK ON 2020

    2020 was such a disruptive year. Yet the life of Christ is the light of the world. That gives me hope heading into 2021. I pray that your Christmas and New Year’s celebrations brought joy and the reminder of what is most important, even in the midst of the challenges from 2020, some of which continue to persist.

    2020 turned into an unexpected, unwanted mishmash of uncertainty, anxiety, cancellations, frustration, fatigue, exasperation, anger, exhaustion, disappointment, a kind of seeming unending ethos of dashed hopes, spiraling fears, sadness and grief.

    Now I have an enhanced appreciation of the Psalms that so eloquently express the same range and depth of emotion we are experiencing. The writers honestly pour out their hearts to God, and in the process of persistently calling out to Him, they come around to see and experience God as our refuge and strength, our rock, fortress, deliverer, a very present help in time of trouble. I’m so thankful for God’s redemptive work in the midst of the miry mishmash. God takes us to deeper levels of resilience, resourcefulness and refinement.

  • Encouragement from the Handleys

    joe and silk masked on plane 640pxHi there, friends! It's good to see you again, and we just want you to know how grateful we are for you this Thanksgiving season. Well, we know it's been a year of a lot of anxiety. And I'm sure many of you have been feeling that, whether it's the pandemic or the economy, or this week, the U.S. election, and we just want you to know we've been praying for you...

    A few weeks ago, Asian Access held our annual fall national directors gathering virtually due to travel restrictions from COVID-19. While not ideal for us, it was such a rich time of fellowship given the limitations of in-depth relational connections via digital formats. Nevertheless, most were delighted to see one another, commune together, and grow in Christ. We spent a great deal of time resting in the public reading of scripture, especially meditating on Psalm 84:5-7.

  • A World in Turmoil

    turmoil benjamin davies vd8DbM 5pDg unsplash 640pxLike you, all of us at Asian Access are facing the challenges surrounding our world from these tumultuous days. The pandemic has forced most of the countries we work in to either go on lockdown or at least practice social distancing and the economic conditions have been immense. Many of our partners shared basic survival needs that are overwhelming. I have a needs list from them for well over $100,000 alone just for food to feed the poor. Many have lost friends and colleagues to the coronavirus and the pandemic seems to have no end in sight, or at least is pretty unpredictable. Add to these the racial and political polarization rising in several countries...

  • Where is God in the extended seasons of unceasing trauma?

    markus spiske 632413 unsplash 600pxOne of our core faculty members, Rod Denton, has been going through a trying season the last several years. After wave upon wave of disappointment and agony, he shared the following wisdom. I'm sharing it here with his permission, and I hope it encourages you...

    It is not always easy to have clear perspective as we have journeyed over many years of illness and chronic pain. How do we make sense of it all? Where is God in the extended seasons of unceasing trauma? How do we push on when there are no easy answers and we feel like we are hanging on by a thread? What can we share with our prayer partners to encourage them, when there is seemingly little or no encouragement to share? {addthis off}

  • Fresh Enthusiasm in Japan

    Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. – Isaiah 43:19 I was struck by hope at the recent A2/Japan National Pastors Conference in Sapporo… All of these pastors pictured here as well as several others shared stories of new life springing forth through their outreach efforts. Many of these pastors ventured “out of their normal boxes” to take their faith...{addthis off}

  • Life's Greatest Challenges... Where Leaders are Made

    Do you ever feel like your life follows the pattern of this biker? We make our plans but they often go in much different ways!

    The theme of our recent Global Leaders’ Summit hit this very topic. David Dayalan, Adrian and Ophelia De Visser and Silk and I shared to spark the conversation. Each of us shared from our deepest places of pain over the past few years. We all have been on the roller coaster of life, much like...
