  • Sunday ‘Zoom Church’—with no morning message!

How one Japanese congregation responded to the COVID-19 pandemic

    Rev. Yoshiya (Joshua) Hari

WHEN I TALKED TO PASTOR YOSHIYA (JOSHUA) HARI, THE NATIONAL DIRECTOR FOR ASIAN ACCESS JAPAN, his church had already been dealing with its own crisis before the coronavirus came. After over 20 years in the same location, in 2019 the congregation of Saikyo Hope Chapel was told they had to vacate the building they were leasing because it would be demolished. Finding a similar facility for the same price proved to be extremely difficult, so from February 2, 2020, they found themselves alternately renting one of two local community centers for services each Sunday.

  • Home church: the new norm in Japan?

Japan (MNN) — In January 2020, a group of believers in Japan lost their church building. Little did they know, God would use their “temporary solution” as a growth point when the pandemic turned the world upside-down.

  • Micro-Revolution?

He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” — Matthew 13:31-32

Japan (MNN) — As cherry blossoms bloom across Japan, the country has barred international spectators from the rescheduled 2021 Summer Olympics due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. 600,000 people bought tickets to watch the games in-person.

  • Takkyubin Church: Generation to Generation

    Part2ohashi 3 generations

I was so inspired a few weeks ago visiting my colleague Pastor Hideo Ohashi. He has served faithfully with Asian Access over several decades and his church is a remarkable testament to God’s faithfulness to Japan.

You’ll see him pictured here with his son and grandson: three generations of pastors! What a powerful image of God’s work from one generation to the next.

  • Criminal charges brought against online churches in China

China (MNN) — Concerning accounts are pouring from China that have nothing to do with a physical virus. Many local believers are reporting crackdowns on the underground Church’s digital presence in China in the form of arrests and criminal charges. Restrictions on digital Christian content are nothing new; some local believers already change their websites and programming on a near-daily basis. However, the COVID-19 pandemic changed the game for two reasons. First, the online Chinese Church has experienced explosive growth since...

  • House Gatherings Multiply in Japan

Joshua HariLast week I learned some encouraging news: During COVID-19 emergency suggestions here in Japan, churches in Japan are seeing some intriguing growth. We have shared previously about a monthly webinar Asian Access has been hosting for pastors: 1) Japan: Online church, first A2/Japan webinar, and more, and 2) Isolation Makes Way for New Connections in Japan. It’s been a tremendous experience as everyone is learning from one another, seeing ways to experiment with new ways to reach their communities, and learning from the global church (especially other countries in Asia) about how they are navigating these unusual times....

  • A Wesley like Revival?

church bldg harry jing 2OM7rUDdsKw unsplash“I sense God is moving us toward home churches in the coming days.” (Adrian De Visser) Right before hearing these words from my colleague Adrian who leads a church movement in Sri Lanka, another colleague, Herman Moldez, shared a similar sentiment as he watched the church changing in the Philippines during COVID-19. While many have shared concerns about having to close their church doors for a while, these two leaders see a silver lining in the dark clouds. Like John Wesley led in England in the 1700s, church is being re-thought and re-considered at least in terms that we may know it as in the modern era. The church was always simply the body of Christ gathered—not a building on the corner where people gather.

  • Called to be salt and light to our nations

adrian screengrab 600pxDear Friends, the collective wisdom from the Asian Access family in light of our current global crisis is such a treasure. As they come in, I’d like to share them with you so that you can sense their heart and the insight they have for those of us in the global body of Christ. Just like our series Eastern Voices, these voices are golden in our day and age. I trust you’ll take a moment to watch/read these words from my colleague, Adrian De Visser, from Sri Lanka. He has an important message to share...

  • Church in Japan leaves the bar for new building

A church that met in a bar has exciting news

(Photo courtesy of Takahiro Ami via Facebook).Japan (MNN) – A couple of months ago, we told you about pastor Takahiro Ami in Sendai City, Japan, who held his church services in a local bar. It was smelly and crowded, but it was the only place they could find. Well, here’s an encouraging update: Joe Handley with Asian Access says Ami has found a new building better suited for his congregation’s needs. “He is cutting new territory with church life in Japan by meeting outside of a traditional church building,” Handley says. “Even just his step into a bar was courageous, and now, to take this to another level, where they’ll have more accessibility for families, is quite remarkable.”

  • Japan church meets in an unlikely location

jpn nightpassage2.jcHaving church in a bar?

Japan (MNN) — When you think of church, what comes to mind? Well-dressed men and women worshipping in a large building with a cross on the top? That’s not always the case. Sometimes, you have to make do with what you have. That’s what Taka Hiroami, the pastor of Praise Community Church in Sendai, Japan who’s working with Asian Access’ leadership development partnership, is dealing with. They don’t have their own building, but that’s not stopping believers from worshipping together.

  • That We May Be One

cam working teamAt Asian Access one of our core goals in our mission is to “unite the Church”. We put it this way, we develop leaders… “to unite the Church, multiply leaders and congregations, and extend the transforming power of the Gospel.”  Jesus himself highlights the importance of unity in John 17: “that they may be one, even as we are one.” He’s speaking of times when the world will tear us apart and this is his prayer to the Father that we may be unified in the midst of the challenges the world throws our way. In my lifetime, I can’t think of a more important season for...

Fortunately, she was diagnosed quickly again and has seen some of the finest doctors in the world to address the...

  • Joyful Church: What a Concept!

tomoaki goto and joe 500pxRecently, I experienced a great deal of joy at Asian Access/Japan National Conference. Story after story was shared that inspired me! One pastor who just graduated from Asian Access/Japan, Tomoaki Goto, shared an incredible vision. He wants his church to be known as the Joyful Church. And Pastor Goto lives out the essence of the word “joy”. Just look at his face pictured here with me. That says it all! Before he shared, several ministry strategists spoke about the needs of the church in Japan...

  • The Power of Authentic Leaders in Action

Silk and I we were in this church that she was really touched by the warmth of the family and friendship—about 100 and 150 people. They asked me to preach that day which was just a wonderful honor and privilege. I had been asked to talk about disciple-making. So I preached this fairly strong message about it, hoping maybe I can inspire this congregation to be disciple makers. Little did I know that they were already very actively doing this. It is really amazing...

  • Common theme in three South Asian churches

Silk and I had the privilege this summer traveling together and we were in three different countries in South Asia. We had the honor of being invited to share in different churches in each country and Silk was deeply impacted by these experiences. Here’s a little of what she shared… “So it was really amazing in the first country...

Photo courtesy By そらみみ (Own work) [CC BY-SA 4.0 (<a href=Japan (MNN) -- If you keep up with worldwide Church trends, check this out. In Japan, few people are stepping into Church leadership roles. Churches have begun considering other possibilities. Gary Bauman of Asian Access explains: "We need new leaders coming in from outside because there is very definitely a Christian subculture in Japan. In many...

  • A Child Shall Lead Them

A few weeks ago, as I was calling several churches who gave to Japan's special tsunami relief efforts, one church shared a powerful story. This church's attendance averages around 125 people, yet they ended up being one of the top ten giving churches in America helping us match the $1,000,000 challenge to bring both spiritual and physical hope to...

    MULTIPLY.

    > reproduce & thrive

MULTIPLY-whiteAsian Access is a vibrant community that seeks to multiply.

We are to be fruitful and multiply. We are to make disciples as we go. We reproduce ourselves in others (multiply disciples) and multiply the influence of Christ in our worlds (leaders, churches and communities).

    • "Be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth
      and increase upon it."
      (Gen 9:7)
    • "If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit." (John 15:5)
    • “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…” (Matt 28:19)
    • “… entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” (2 Tim 2:2)

We are committed to reproduction on all levels:

    1. Personal Multiplication: We are leaders serving leaders.
      • Generally, multiplication comes after death to self: "Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds." (John 12:24)
    2. Leaders and Disciples: Develop leaders who reproduce themselves in others—leaders who multiply disciples.
    3. Congregations & Churches: We want to develop leaders who multiply churches that impact their communities, reach new believers, and reproduce new churches.

    The Need for More Churches

"Today five out of six non-Christians in our world
have no hope unless missionaries come
     to them
    and plant the
     church among them."

    Dr. David Bryant

Asian Access is a vibrant community that seeks to multiply on all levels: believers, leaders, churches.

A Proven Model Developed in Japan for Multiplying Churches

Perhaps the greatest contribution that Asian Access has made to the work of the church and the work of the Gospel in Japan has been the development of a proven model and a strategy for church multiplication. This is an innovative way to multiply churches — sometimes with missionaries and sometimes without!

    more about this model

    Church Multiplication Across Asia

Though Japan has missionaries for the work of church multiplication, this work will likely look different in other Asian countries. Political situations alone dictate this. Yet, we trust that a possible result of our leadership development model is the fostering of a church multiplication vision.
