  • Culture Reigns

    crown 424pxThe critical battle between Culture and Values

    I recall participating in a seminar set aside by a church where a group of its leaders came together to identify the values of the church. The group, seated around tables, were led through a day where the end product of identifying its key values was achieved. Much has changed in that church since that day and I daresay that there would not be many who would now remember the list of values that were agreed upon that day. Further, It would seem that there was little attempt to communicate those values to the church at large, as life in the church has steadily deteriorated with the passing of time. On reflection, I have jotted down the following insights from that experience... {addthis off}

  • ALL IN with God

    all in 500x221Asian Access recently reviewed our values as a mission. What a fascinating journey and valuable learning experience it was! We spent hours in dialog throughout the movement at every level: volunteers, staff, alumni, faculty, board and reference council. It was nothing short of amazing to see things come together. As we honed the various nuances and prioritized down to three core characteristics, we came up with three core values. The first is...

    The last few years I have sensed the Lord calling us at Asian Access to go deeper in who we are as we feel called to grow broader across Asia. As we went into our 2015 strategic planning process, my sense is that God wasn't calling us to anything profoundly new, but rather calling us...

    1. Rise and fall of religious cults

    In the past ten years or more Japan has seen a rise in the number of "New Religion" cults especially attracting Japanese young people (college through young career age). A common draw is the promise of inner fulfillment through a variety of techniques of meditation, yoga, mind control and asceticism. Mind control methods used by the cults have received wide attention from the media. This is an opportunity for the church to declare the Truth of God's Word.

    2. Scandalous politics

    It seems that every month for the past five or six years a new scandal...
