  • Camellia Flower and the Gospel

    00399 00689As Silk and I are saying farewell to our home of the last 4.5 years, we have visited our friends and colleagues in several places. We wish we’d have time to see everyone but the coronavirus has limited our options. One of the places we were able to visit was the sites of the “Hidden Christians” in Japan. By now you have heard of the book and film “Silence” which reveals some of their story. They went through horrendous persecution for their faith and the stories we heard of their resilience, perseverance, and faithfulness despite the awful treatment and their ultimate sacrifice were sobering and inspiring...

  • Personal Vision Worksheet

    joel staveley Uo87K3AkF 4 unsplash croppsedThe following worksheet is provided to help clarify your calling in life. It is organized to help you see how God has worked in the past, is working in the present, and how He will work in your life in the future. In the past, God used specific characteristics, events, people and teachings to guide your direction and thinking. These influenced your desires. God is in control, and your life is influenced by design – not coincidence. Direction and confidence for the present and future can be aided by reflecting on what has occurred in the past. By looking at the past and...{addthis off}

  • New Year, new optimism for Japan.

    Japan 2020Japan (MNN) – In his New Year address, Japan’s emperor Naruhito greeted his subjects, wished them well, hoped for a disaster-free year, and tried to set a tone of optimism. It was a message that resonated with people now struggling on multiple fronts. Joe Handley, president of Asian Access, said there are various layers on the social issues. “The people are not happy,...{addthis off}

  • 10:2

    10:2The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. “Therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into the harvest.” – Luke 10:2 Maya Chittry, one of our national directors, recently spoke to a conference in Japan on the topic of intercession. She shared about a group of ladies from her country that regularly gather together for prayer. They often fast and pray for their nation, the communities and families they have, and for other countries. I’ve even experienced them praying for me and my family several times over the years. She talked about how a Buddhist leader in one village who was stridently anti-Christian came down with boils. It just so happened that Maya’s ladies had been praying for that village for six months. When this Buddhist leader was at his wits end in trying to solve the problem, he called the ladies to pray as a last resort and he got healed. Today his whole family are believers in Jesus...{addthis off}

  • A Big Vision for Japan:

    Vision Festa Church Multiplication Conference

    vision festa panelThe Church in Japan faces a crisis. And Japan’s pastors and church leaders are stepping up to face it head-on. The crisis? Unless the Church begins to grow immediately, it is possible that the Christian community in Japan will literally die out within 30 years. It’s stark evidence that illustrates how difficult it has been for the Gospel to impact the Japanese culture. The encouragement? Leaders in Japan are collaborating to explore new ways to plant and multiplying churches. In October, over 100 leaders from throughout Japan came together at VisionFesta...{addthis off}

  • Meet Ariunbold: A "Bold" Vision for Church Planting

    00333 00553Meet Ariunbold! He has vision like I’ve rarely seen. It’s a God-given vision, passion, and gift mix that truly is rare among pastors these days but one that Asian Access loves to fan the flames for. Ariunbold truly is “Bold” in his faith and action. When he joined the first A2 cohort in Mongolia almost 20 years ago, Ariunbold had started 3 churches. But through Asian Access he was inspired and equipped to take his unique gifts into a whole new stratosphere. He is the embodiment of our brand: “Changing the few who change the many”... {addthis off}

  • Former Hindu priest with vision to see 2.4M people come to Christ!

    Not long ago I met this pastor in one of our Asian Access cohorts. His name, face and country are hidden to protect him, his family, church and the work of God in his community. What a story though! As he was sharing, I learned that he was formerly a Hindu Priest. He came to the capital of his country to seek a better life because he was on the brink of disaster—close to suicide because his life was so bad. Along the way...

  • The Medici Effect - Implications for Mission

    The Medici Effect book coverNot long ago, one of my doctoral committee members suggested that the core of my dissertation research was very much in line with some new thinking related to the concept of the Medici Effect. You can learn more about this through Frans Johansson’s book of the same title linked above. Wikipedia describes this approach as:

    “In the book, Johansson argues that innovation comes from diverse industries, cultures, and disciplines when they all intersect, bringing ideas from one field into another. He also recommends assembling diverse..

  • A2|50th Day 2: Expanding Access

    Adrian and DougEach day at our Jubilee in Jakarta highlighted a different theme. On Day 1, we focused on our pioneering days, originally as the Language Institute for Evangelism in 1967 and later LIFE Ministries in the mid-1980s, which was focused on Japan. Our theme for Day 1 was aptly titled Pioneering Life. Day 2 took us into a new season in the life of the global church, an era where fresh paradigms were being touted as new ways forward in ministry. Our theme for the day was Expanding Access! It was during this era our name changed from "LIFE Ministries" to "Asian Access" and the day began with a perfect reflection from Dr. Ajith Fernando highlighting the importance of unity. He led us in an in-depth devotion walking through the New Testament with keen attention on the book of Acts showing the importance of staying united in the development, growth and challenges for the...

  • Joyful Church: What a Concept!

    tomoaki goto and joe 500pxRecently, I experienced a great deal of joy at Asian Access/Japan National Conference. Story after story was shared that inspired me! One pastor who just graduated from Asian Access/Japan, Tomoaki Goto, shared an incredible vision. He wants his church to be known as the Joyful Church. And Pastor Goto lives out the essence of the word “joy”. Just look at his face pictured here with me. That says it all! Before he shared, several ministry strategists spoke about the needs of the church in Japan...

  • God-Sized Vision

    god sized vision post webThis group of graduating pastors inspired me! I spent a week with them in South Asia listening to their stories, hearing their heart and facilitating discussions along with my colleagues Mary Jo Wilson and Pastor Laji. The focus of our week was World Mission and each of the pastors presented their strategy paper for their church. Most compelling as usual with Asian Access is our core teaching about being “ALL IN with GOD”. To hear these pastors share about the importance of their “love relationship with God” was deeply moving.  As each of them spent significant time with the Lord and with one another over the past two and a half years, the Lord laid on their hearts a vision like you...

  • Asian believers cast vision for massive outreach

    (Photo courtesy of Asian Access)Asia (MNN) -- Terrorists are striking fear around the world, but they're not stopping dedicated believers. By the year 2030, Christians in an Asian country hope to have sent out 20,000 indigenous missionaries. Joe Handley with Asian Access, a ministry dedicated to raising up Christian leaders, says: "There is a sense, at least for many parts of Asia that the Gospel has been brought to them, and they owe a debt to God for bringing this hope to...

  • Soaring Vision for Japan!

    byron-joe-and-leadersI had the privilege of traveling across the Kanto plane from Yokohama to Saitama and Tokyo this past weekend with my former colleague, Pastor Byron MacDonald, the senior pastor of Rolling Hills Covenant Church. He inspired younger leaders everywhere he went, many tearing up with his charge from the life of Joshua in taking the baton of leadership for the next generation of the...

  • Going Deeper

    Going DeeperGoing DeeperGo Deeper Together: Becoming our Vision, Living out our Mission

    The last few years I have sensed the Lord calling us at Asian Access to go deeper in who we are as we feel called to grow broader across Asia. As we went into our 2015 strategic planning process, my sense is that God wasn't calling us to anything profoundly new, but rather calling us...

  • The Antioch of Asia

    I just spent a few days with one of Asian Access Country Directors following our Leaders' Gathering in Singapore. During our brief visit, this leading pastor confirmed a comment he hinted at this past June on my last visit. He shared with me that he was convinced one of the regions in his country would soon become "The Antioch of Asia" -...
